How "Available" are YOU?

The internet can be pretty scary at times. Do you realise how easy it is to access your personal information? Your phone number, name, address? Even get driving instructions on how to get to your location (if you're in the USA)??Did you know that www.google.com works as a telephone directory?? If you're in the USA, anybody can find you through their search engine. If you've got an unlisted number, this won't apply to you:Go type your phone number into the search box in this format 555 444 1212 (no dashes or anything). It'll bring up your full name and address, and it'll give you 2 map links. The yahoo map will even give driving instructions on how to get to where you're at!!There should be a telephone icon next to your listing.

If you don't want to be listed, click on that and request to be removed from the service. This one's for USA only, too: Free Internet Access to Public RecordsListed are over 800 state, county, city and federal (court) URL's where you can access public record information for free. CrimeScreen.comDon't think you're outta the woods just because you don't live in the United States. There are worldwide lists too. Here's an example: www.hansaprint.fiThis one's a combination of worldwide yellow and white pages. A lot of them will link you to maps, where anybody can see your location.Ok, here's another one, this one is reliant on people giving accurate info though. Do you own your own registered domain? go do a "WhoIs" here:netsolutions.comBrings up a lot of info, huh?So how can you stop your personal information from getting broadcast on the web? Maybe you can't, totally, but there are a few guidelines, that if followed, will make you less "available"Make sure your phone number is UNLISTED! A lot of online phonebooks are based on a database used by the telephone company.

Which in turn leads to your address.Use a web based email program instead of the one provided by your ISP. Your ISP provided email address should only be given to your most trusted friends and family. This is because your ISP has your address, and possibly your banking information if your are allowing them to bill you automatically.Get some software to make your websurfing anonymous:

Use a firewall program if you aren't behind one already. That way the information on your computer can't be accessed by another online computer without you being prompted for permission. This site contains an excellent list of many different personal firewall programs: castor.tsl.state.tx.usSo what if your information's already out there? What can you do about it? Well it's a long, hard job, but it CAN be done, by actually using search engines to find your personal information, and then using the remove features supplied by each particular website or writing the webmaster and requesting that he remove the info. There you have it, you're "available" but you don't HAVE to be unless you want to.

IP Phone Systems

What began as a novelty application for Internet users to converse on-line has now graduated into a sophisticated and the most cost-effective technology, capable of replacing the traditional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) and PBX (Private Branch Exchange) phones. That's IP Phone for you.

The hardware requirements of a domestic user are very simple. All that an IP application requires is an ordinary PC equipped with IP software and connected to the Internet. Attach speakers and a microphone to the PC, you are all set to call any number ? whether local, international or cellular ? incurring only Internet expenses. If you don't have a computer, you can use a specially manufactured IP Phone (basically a phone with a built-in adaptor) or even a regular phone supported by an IP adapter.

If you want to operate even during power failure, you will need a generator or a UPS.

Software requirements are also equally simple. Popular service providers like...

Long Distance Care for Your Aging Parent Living Alone

In 1987, 8.5 million elderly lived alone; by 2020, 13.3 million elderly will live alone. These elderly may suffer if they don't have face-to-face interaction with others or if they don't have measures in place to handle emergencies. As a child or caring relative or friend who lives too far away to care for your loved one in person, there are steps you can take to help from afar (and give you peace of mind). Develop a support network of people living close to your loved one. Discuss this with your loved one in order to compile a list of neighbors, friends, and other relatives living in the area.

Contact those people to request their support. Ask them to keep in contact with the person not only via phone but also by sharing meals, visiting, taking them out of the house, etc. Provide those in the network with your contact information and ask that they get in touch with you if any concerns (you can offer to have them call you collect) ? let them know that you may contact them occasionally...

Phones - How To Find The Cheapest Phone Calling Card

The number of advertisements on the internet and the magazines regarding calling cards today have made the decision making process a trifle confusing and complicated. Prepaid calling phone cards are designed to be used while you are out of your home city or town on a vacation or a business trip. They are made to facilitate calling from most phones easier and affordable by cutting down on stupendous charges or surcharges levied by hoteliers and other gamut of tourist attractions.
Most times, the prepaid phone card calling rates are comparable to those imposed by Sprint, AT&T or MCI WorldCom. These companies charge anywhere between 69 to 89 cents a minute for long distance along with a surcharge, if not renewed monthly.

However, paying a monthly subscription cuts costs.

A monthly fee of $1 to AT&T will cut the calling-card rate down to 25 cents a minute; a monthly fee of $2 to MCI will bring it down to 15 cents a minute. Sprint is offering dime-a-minute...
